Affordable Green
LEED makes it easy to build green homes for any budget
LEED homes represent the top tier of green homebuilding. But that doesn't mean they have to come with a premium price. LEED has been the tool behind innovative green homes across the spectrum of housing types, and that includes roughly 250 affordable homes. In fact, in many ways, LEED for Homes is especially well-suited to affordable housing projects.
• LEED homes' lower energy use means tenants pay less every month in electric bills.
• Water conservation and other efficiency measures keep utility costs down.
• Superior indoor air quality protects residents' health, which can reduce health-care costs.
• LEED homes are often within walking distance of many amenities.
• Access to public transit and employment centers minimizes vehicle expenses.
To help homebuilders build healthy, efficient, affordable homes – and thanks to the generosity of The Home Depot Foundation – grant funding is available to help cover some of the cost of registration, verification and certification for affordable LEED for Homes projects.
